BBQ to go! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Zha Si Mo

It was last sunday evening, we were at Hong wa si, the big shao kao (BBQ) happening around Chuan Da east gate. Chilling with some cold beers, just ordered from one of the 10 shao kao stands and no clue of what would happen next. About 30 tables, 100 chairs and vendors moving to all directions, clearing the whole corner in less then 5 minutes! All they left was trash and customers still chewing their cat meat...

Half was gone before we even realised and then figured it must've had something to do with Chengdu's jing cha (police). Obviously they got tipped of. Well in time even, no stress or panic what so ever. It seemed everyone had their assigned stuff to hide and were very well organised. It seemed this wasn't the first time. Of course it was quite an amusing sight, even more so when we noticed the fat lawenforcer watching this whole thing from his office right behind us. Luckily this policeman was a shao kao symphatiser and didn't seem to care much about the fleeing and hiding.

A raid! The shao kao intervention team's at the spot investigating: taking records from the scene of the crime, looking for evidence against their target: shao kao vendors! Not only did they seem poorly equiped, one videotaping and the other four just standing around, but they were late and it showed. It didn't really take a detective to get the picture though. The trash consisted of nothing but chewed on sticks and napkins, people were still eating their meat standing up or waiting for their table to be put back. A whole block of shao kao stands dissapeared in thin air when they were just about to bag our dinner. Good thing we still had our beers, although we lost our table.

License to BBQ

Just to point out, to those not living in China: For selling bbq on the street you need a license, and obviously most of the vendors dont have it. ;)
