China and especially Chengdu is a fascinating place. I have only been to Shanghai and Chengdu in China, and I liked Chengdu better. It still has some of that down to earth feeling about it and it's people.
When going through Chengdu, in one moment you can feel and see city's old Chinese heritage and next you have huge building with buildings size advertisement in front of you. You can have the old China by going to Buddhist temples and teahouses, the new China by going to modern and big Computer City Department store. I visited Chengdu in the winter, so I imagine there will be much more to see at summertime. But what surprised me most, were the people. That there really were so much people there (the population of Chengdu is the double of that in whole Finland) and that they were really nice and friendly. Food is the best part in Chengdu. You can enjoy a huge variety of everything, from traditional Sichuan Hot Pot (四川火锅) to Italian style pizza. But restaurant serving Finnish food I didn't find :). Local food is very good, very spicy and very hot. Luckily for a westerner like me, there were some "not so spicy & hot" versions. And I usually like spicy food. The most surprising taste was the so called Sichuan numb pepper (花椒 or 麻椒). I don't know how to describe it well, but you get a hot, sizzling feeling in your mouth and after a moment the numbness takes over. But it is something you must really taste before you can understand it. Visit Chengdu. I liked it.
