Chengdu is the capital and biggest city of Sichuan Province, located in the northwest of the Sichuan Basin. With its population of over 10 million and size of over 12 thousand sq km, Chengdu is a modern metropolis in the center of Southwest China. The city has a history of over 2000 years, most of it filled with prosperity and abundance of natural riches. Even nowadays, you will always find fresh fruits and vegetables in the markets of Chengdu, all with very inexpensive prices. Since around 400 BC, Chengdu has been the government, military, commerce and cultural centre in this part of China, undergoing several name changes and dynasties. Chengdu is among the cleanest cities in China, although with an all-year cover of fog, not pollution, blue skies are not that common here. Climate of Chengdu is very comfortable. During winter the temperature rarely drops below zero, snowfall happens very rarely, not even every year. One can say that it never snows in Chengdu. The summer of Chengdu is long, usually lasting from late April to early October, which rounds to about 6 months of warm, humid weather. Because of the humid air and all-year fog, even when the temperature rises to over 35°C, you don't have to be afraid of burning in the sun, as in other regions with similar hot weather. Chengdu is well known for its tea-houses, spicy foods, the peoples love for relaxation and playing majiang (mah-jong). As Sichuan is the home of the Great Panda bear, Chengdu holds the worlds only Panda Breeding center where tourists can see pandas in a natural habitat all year long. Chengdu is a cultural hub in the Southwest China, with Sichuan Opera and the top 10 ranked university in China, Sichuan University. Chengdu is also a hub for travel, with many World Cultural Heritage sites and the only city with direct flights, and trains, to Tibet. Living in Chengdu is a life full of joy, good food and most importantly, a life without stress.
