Huan Tian Zai is a Miao-minority cuisine restaurant, featuring Miao Jia Suan Tang Yu (苗家酸汤鱼) sour fish and Hua Jiang Gou Rou(花江狗肉) dog meat. I had the opportunity to enjoy their Suan Tang Yu already twice and I must confess it is one of the best fish dishes I've eaten in Chengdu. Although not of Sichuan cuisine, it's origins being with the Miao people of Guizhou, this restaurant and their special fish is one of the more popular ones in Chengdu at the moment. Their special dishes are Sour Soup Fish and Hua River Dog Meat. The Sour Soup Fish at the first glance looks like hot pot, it is infact not spicy but very sour instead. The fish used are not of the types usually eaten in Sichuan, being almost without bones and having plenty of meat on them, in comparison in popular Sichuan fish dishes the fish are small, boney and have a muddy taste in them unless boiled in a lot of spices. You order the fish as whole and fresh and will be billed according to the weight of it. Although the soup is very sour, after dipping the fish into your mixed spice cup, it changes to a extremly delicious flavor. I haven't yet had the chance to try the The Hua River Dog Meat dish, but since dog meat serving restaurants are not that common sight in Chengdu, I can see this one being almost as popular as their sour dishes. They also have a good selection of other Guizhou and Miao cuisine dishes, some spicy, some not. As we chose the cheapest fish for the soup and had a nicely sized fish, the bill for two was about a hundred RMB. Prices for the fish start from 28 Yuan/Jin (0.5 kg) ranging to 68 Yuan/Jin. My opinion: 4/5 - Recommended Pros:
